Before the Storm: What You Should Know
Delta Utilities prepares year-round for storms and severe weather events by pre-positioning crews, stocking critical materials, and coordinating with local and state agencies to ensure a fast and safe recovery. But safety is a team effort—here’s how you can help protect your home, family, and community when it comes to natural gas and storm readiness:
Keep your natural gas meter on.
Do not turn off your natural gas at the meter. Leaving it on helps maintain proper pressure and prevents floodwater from entering natural gas lines.
If you want to turn off your natural gas, do it on your appliances.
If you want to discontinue use, you can turn off each appliance individually. When you’re ready to restore your natural gas, follow the instructions for each appliance. If you need help, call a licensed plumber or natural gas technician.
Have a plan for using your portable generator.
Never run a generator indoors, in a garage, or near windows, doors, or vents. Generators emit carbon monoxide, an odorless and potentially deadly gas. Learn more about Carbon Monoxide Safety before using a portable generator.
Secure your home and supplies.
Prepare your homes and families for the storm. Secure loose outdoor items, gather critical supplies (food, water, medications), and review your evacuation plan.
Smell Gas? Act Fast!
Mercaptan is added to natural gas to help detect leaks and has a strong odor, often described as rotten eggs. If you suspect a leak, leave the area immediately, call 1-833-DELTA-99 (1-833-335-8299) and 911. If you can, warn others in the immediate area surrounding the suspected leak. Don’t do anything that could cause a spark, including starting a vehicle, using a phone, turning lights on or off, or lighting a match.
Clean the area around your natural gas meter.
When putting out heavy trash or storm debris, make sure it’s placed far from your natural gas meter, especially if your meter is near the curb. Debris removal equipment can damage the meter and create a safety hazard. If a meter is damaged, leave the area and call 1-833-DELTA-99 (1-833-335-8299) immediately. Learn more about Meter Safety.
Flooded home? Check before you reconnect.
Have a licensed plumber or natural gas appliance technician inspect your appliances before requesting service reconnection. Don’t forget to check outdoor appliances like pool heaters and natural gas grills.
Call before you dig.
Planning cleanup or repairs that involve digging? Call 811 before you start to locate underground utility lines and avoid accidents. Learn more about the Call Before You Dig program.
Support safe recovery.
Stay clear of active work areas and keep driveways and streets accessible for crews and first responders. Report any visible damage or suspected leaks.
