SAFETY Fraud Prevention
Utility Scams
and Fraud
Bad actors may pose as Delta Utilities employees to scam customers, steal personal information, or access a customer’s financial information. The information and tips below can help our customers avoid utility scams, protect their identity and assets, and enjoy safe, reliable natural gas services with peace of mind.
What to Do if You're Scammed by Utility Fraud
End all communication with suspected scammers immediately.
If scammers are at your home or business and you feel threatened, call 911.
Report the fraud to the appropriate law enforcement agencies, your bank and other financial institutions, and Delta Utilities.
Beware of Impersonators
On the Phone
Scammers may call or text customers, threatening to immediately disconnect your service and demanding immediate payment through prepaid cards, online payment portals, and fake websites.
We will send you disconnection notices in the mail before disconnecting or shutting off your utility service, and we offer several bill payment options without specifying the type of payment you need to make.
Online
Scammers may send emails requesting payments made through portals not controlled by Delta Utilities.
Delete suspicious emails and do not use links or QR codes or open attachments unless you have verified the sender. Contact Delta Utilities Customer Service to verify emails, links, or other suspicious requests you receive online.
In Person
All Delta Utilities employees wear branded uniforms, drive branded vehicles, and carry identification badges, and we will typically call or email you in advance of any service.
If you’re unsure if the person at your home is a Delta Utilities employee, ask for their ID badge or call Customer Service to confirm crews are in your area.
Contact Customer Service if:
- Someone demands immediate payment to prevent utility disconnect
- Someone asks for payment via cash, prepaid cards, wire transfers, services like PayPal, Venmo, or Zelle, or suspicious websites
- You receive calls, emails, and text messages sent from phone numbers and email addresses not affiliated with Delta Utilities
- You receive QR codes asking for personal information, prompting payments, or sent by an unexpected phone number or email address
- The “employee” does not have an ID badge
- The “employee” cannot answer legitimate questions about your account, services, or Delta Utilities
