Natural gas meters measure the amount of natural gas that flows through them, which allows utility customers and companies to determine the amount of natural gas consumed within a household or business. Natural gas meters can be located both inside and outside of your home.

INSPECTION Federal regulations require Delta Utilities to periodically inspect our equipment, including piping and natural gas meters, to help ensure proper maintenance and service reliability. 

Property owners are responsible for the inspection and maintenance of the piping that connects the natural gas meter to their homes, businesses, and other facilities, and Delta Utilities is responsible for the servicing and maintenance of the natural gas meter.

    Do

    • Keep the path to the natural gas meter clear, with 3 feet of clearance in the front, and at least 2 feet of clearance on either side
    • Keep vegetation and debris off the meter using a soft broom or brush
    • Use caution when using landscaping tools, like lawnmowers, weed eaters, and shovels, around your meter
    • Be aware of natural gas meters and pipes inside of your home before drilling or installing items like pictures or shelving
    • Keep your meter in an open, ventilated space

    Don't

    • Do not lean ladders or heavy objects against the meter
    • Do not tie or attach anything to a meter or piping, including wires, ropes, dog leashes, and insulation
    • Do not allow children to climb on or play near natural gas meters
    • NEVER tamper with a natural gas meter or attempt to service or maintain it yourself
    • Natural gas meters should not be enclosed in structures, such as a shed or deck, or by coverings like tarps or bins
